The working Fictory Model for Jenkins in ARLS

You’d think with all the love we give to Robo and Helsie that they’re the only characters in the film! Not true, where would Robo be without his trusty action scientists? Specifically Jenkins. Now anyone who’s ever read the Atomic Robo comic knows that Jenkins is one stone cold cucumber. A fact that isn’t lost on us at the Fictory. Jenkins has an important role to play in the upcoming release. And we’ll give you a sneak peak at some Jenkins animation tests on Wednesday! So… see you then!

I’M GETTING TOO ROBO FOR THIS SHIT! ::

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

The Fictory is humming along finishing up the “teaser” for  ATOMIC ROBO: Last Stop. While the team finishes up all the odds and ends for that I’ve been going full tilt boogie on the remaining storyboards. In the sequence below we see Robo get squared up and popping a shot off at Helsie’s rocket pods. Before he let’s one fly, Robo does the only fitting thing;

“The Danny Glover neck roll”.

If you were born in the Nineties you may say “is the Danny Glover neck roll some type of funky sushi?”  If you were alive in the Eighties or if you have even a passing love of the buddy cop genre, you’ve seen Danny Glover do the the old neck crack before he shoots a dude in the face. Seriously, he does it in all 4 films and you knew somebody was getting there wig peeled back when it happened. I can hear that Saxophone right now.

Stay tuned true believers because this teaser may be dropping on a certain patriotic holiday where a certain country told King George to cram it with walnuts.

A ROUGH DIRECTION ::

This Sketch Helped me work out Helsie's Movements

As a Director, time management is the name of the game. Most of my time in studio is spent guiding and overseeing work staffers are generating. One of the effects of this workflow, is that I don’t have as much time as I would like to actually animate. Don’t worry, I still throw down, but most of my time on Atomic Robo: Last Stop is spent compositing and well… directing. So I  relish my sketchbook time. I’ve posted some sketches from very early in the production. They are unfinished illustrations, where I was simply training myself to be more familiar with Robo and Helsie. The idea is to draw the characters in different poses over and over again so when it comes time to animate, the characters, nuances are second nature. Enjoy!

Here I am trying to familiarize myself with Robo's personality

Scale and Weapons: You might call Robo the underdog in this short...
