I’M GETTING TOO ROBO FOR THIS SHIT! ::
Saturday, June 19th, 2010
The Fictory is humming along finishing up the “teaser” for ATOMIC ROBO: Last Stop. While the team finishes up all the odds and ends for that I’ve been going full tilt boogie on the remaining storyboards. In the sequence below we see Robo get squared up and popping a shot off at Helsie’s rocket pods. Before he let’s one fly, Robo does the only fitting thing;
“The Danny Glover neck roll”.
If you were born in the Nineties you may say “is the Danny Glover neck roll some type of funky sushi?” If you were alive in the Eighties or if you have even a passing love of the buddy cop genre, you’ve seen Danny Glover do the the old neck crack before he shoots a dude in the face. Seriously, he does it in all 4 films and you knew somebody was getting there wig peeled back when it happened. I can hear that Saxophone right now.
Stay tuned true believers because this teaser may be dropping on a certain patriotic holiday where a certain country told King George to cram it with walnuts.

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS:: ::
Sunday, March 14th, 2010
Lots of great stuff happening this week in the studio. Saturday started with The Fictory’s first field trip to a local train yard to shoot some reference pics for the upcoming train yard scenes in the short. It was cold and wet but we got some great pics that will help us populate future scenes! One of the cooler things I was tasked with this week was creating patches for a close up of Robo’s vintage bomber jacket. Hardcore Robo fans will catch the references to past adventures. I composited the Patches on to the still of his leather jacket and have included a preview for you guys!

ANATOMY OF A SCENE 01 – BACKGROUNDS:: ::
Monday, February 22nd, 2010
This week we’ll be showing more or less what goes into a scene from boards to finish. My first job is to generate storyboards that we use to map out the short. Some shots are taken from the boards verbatim and some evolve a bit as the production goes on. After my boards are composited into the animatic I move on to generating line art for the still backgrounds and finally the colored version that will appear in the short. Here’s shot 20 from boards to backgrounds.
Stay tuned throughout the week because next we’re showing Dominic’s key animation frames and process and THEN on Friday we’ll show a few seconds of shot 20 FULLY ANIMATED in glorious Technicolor!

WE’RE BACK AT IT:: ::
Saturday, February 13th, 2010
So it took a week to complete the interlocking snow tunnels leading from our houses to the The Fictory. We’re back at it now so stay tuned for some kick ass posts this week. We might have convinced Joe to post a *small* taste of the Animated Robo on Friday. Until then enjoy a thing that will never ever appear in the short by Steve Becker.

HELSINGARD, A LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP:: ::
Friday, February 5th, 2010
When we started this short we all knew Helsingard would make an apearance. Scott and Brian had pointed out that whenever Helsie appeared in the pages of Robo he had a different configuration, so we should feel free to design our own for this short. Awesome…right? We all took shots at designing a Helsie for this short. Now the tricky part with animation is providing “interesting” character design that isn’t overly detailed. We argued and redrew but ultimately none of us was 100% happy with what we came up with.
We recently added another production artist to our ranks, a Mister Steve Becker. Steve is a cat I’ve known since we both attended the hallowed halls of Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. His first job was to design us a kick ass Helsingard. He took it and ran wild generating a LOT of art for us to pick and choose the best bits. I’ve included a few pieces for you guys along with a good shot of what Helsingard’s main design will look like. It’s still a work in progress so stay tuned for the final full color design with a complete turn around
