Now things are starting to take shape. We have some train car assets popped in. Next we need to vary the train car styles and color and also ad some more dimension to the otherwise flat props. And of course, we’ll need to pop Helsingard into the background as he chases Robo and rips up the virtual set.

The chase scene from the film is proving to be one of the most complicated things we’re doing. The shot requires 2D animation 2.5D landscapes, 3D modeling and animation, and compositing. Above is the shot in its earliest incarnation. I’ll be updating more progress soon!

Robo’s got his work cut out for him. Here is an animation test by our lead 3D animator, Riley Hearn. Keep in mind, like most things on the blog, this sequence if very rough. But it’s still super frickin’ cool! I just had to share. Keep in mind, our version of Helsingard stands at an intimidating 15 feet. Those guns are realllllly big. I’m not saying Robo’s getting his ass kicked or anything but, it’s hard to fight a dude that fires fully automatic rounds larger than your head….
